COMMUNITY PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT
Needs Assessment Survey: Reopening Ard Bhaile Community Childcare Ltd

Project Background:

A few years ago, Mayfield lacked community-run childcare and preschool facilities, making it challenging for parents to work or pursue education. Recently, five childcare services emerged, alongside a privately run crèche, totaling six options. Ard Bhaile, a crucial full-day care provider, recently closed, causing significant issues for working families.
In response to the community's needs, the Family Support Unit of RAPID (Cork City Council), in collaboration with the Health Service Executive (HSE), is exploring the possibility of reopening Ard Bhaile Community Childcare Ltd. To ensure the preschool/crèche aligns with the community's actual requirements, the Family Support Unit of RAPID commissioned this needs assessment survey. Its objective is to evaluate family issues, the Mayfield community's profile, local childcare services, schools, and other community projects related to Ard Bhaile Community Childcare Ltd's closure and potential reopening.
This survey adopted a broad perspective to answer the question: "Why should Ard Bhaile Community Childcare Ltd be reopened?"

Key Findings:

The survey's key findings reveal strong support for reopening the preschool, with 80% of residents in favour.
They believe it will:

-
Facilitate families' return to work and education.
-
Boost the community's economic well-being by providing a source of income.
-
Offer affordable preschool options for low-income families.
-
Promote children's personal and social development.
-
Foster bonding between parents and children through parenting skill programs.
-
Address poverty and social exclusion.
-
Encourage an understanding of cultural diversity.
-
Enhance community development principles.

Summary:
Feedback from the survey indicated that:

-
A strong desire for the preschool's reopening.
-
Support from members of the community beyond direct users.
-
Relief for parents attending programs while their children were in the crèche/preschool.
-
Reduced stress levels and more personal time for parents.
-
An opportunity for parents to return to education and work, potentially reducing unemployment.
-
Accessibility of quality preschool education for low-income families.
-
The creation of a central meeting point for the community, particularly for families.
-
Job opportunities for those with childcare skills and participants in C Schemes within the community.
